
4th Wall Theatre announces auditions for the final show of the 2009-2010 season, the musical, The LIFE.

Book by David Newman, Cy Coleman & Ira Gasman, Music by Cy Coleman. Directed by Gregory Allen, Musical direction by Deborah Martin and Choreography by Kate Swan.
Auditions will be held on Sunday & Monday March 7 & 8 at 7:00 pm at the Westminster Arts Center in Bloomfield. Sign up starts at 6:30 pm. (Please arrive no later than 8:00 pm to sign up for a slot.)
Prepare a song and bring sheet music in your key that shows off your range and your ability to act a song and show different sides of a character. Also be prepared to read from the script if requested. Callbacks will be on Saturday, March 13 beginning at 2:00 pm. Actors will be asked to learn a dance combination and will sing and read from the show.

Rehearsals begin in April, and the show opens at the beginning of June and runs for three weekends. All actors must be available for the entire eight week rehearsal period. A Small stipend will be paid.
THE LIFE is a Tony Award winning musical set in New York City in the early 1980s - before Disney's invasion of Times Square. Back when hookers, pimps and hustlers could be seen on every corner: each with their own story of how they came to be in "the life" and how some tried desperately to escape it. The show follows Queen, a prostitute who works to support her man, Fleetwood. She has managed to save money to chase a shared dream, but circumstances and those around her conspire to keep her in their seedy world.
THE LIFE is a wonderful story of hope, perseverance and friendship found in the most unlikely of places.
4th Wall has an open casting policy in all roles except where specifically noted below. We are looking for a multicultural cast, with respect to ethnicity, age, and size to show how varied. the life truly is
Characters:
QUEEN: African-American female from Savannah, GA who has moved to New York with her boyfriend and has stumbled into prostitution to make ends meet. She constantly speaks of her dreams she has to escape the life. Late 20s-early 40s. Must have a large range with a good soprano mix.

FLEETWOOD: Male who is a disillusioned Vietnam vet who came to NY from Savannah with Queen to make a better life for the two of them. He has a drug habit that he can't break which causes him to lose everything in his pursuit of his dream. Late 20s-40s. Bari-tenor.

JOJO: Male con artist who acts as the narrator for the entire show; sometimes being the 'puppet master' for everything that happens. He is a master hustler who can con just about anyone. Has a charm to him the entire time he hustles. 30s-40s. Tenor. (must sing a B-flat.)

SONJA: African-American female who is an experienced hooker from upstate New York and one of Memphis' women. She has been in the life a long time and is resigned to staying there, but not broken by what it has done to her. She befriends Queen and has her own 'sassy' way of coping with her life. Mid 30s-50s. Strong Belt.

MEMPHIS: African-American male who is the most successful pimp on the block. He is sure of his power and is looked after by his entourage of pimps and hustlers. 30s-40s. Baritone with some strong upper notes.

MARY: Caucasian female who is young and pretty from Duluth, Minnesota. She is new to New York, but not new to hustling men. She feigns innocence while using everyone around her to climb ahead. Early 20s. Sop/Mix.

LACY: Male, eccentric owner/bartender at the regular gathering place of the hookers and pimps. He's an old time hoofer. 40s-60s. Baritone.
LOU: Caucasian male who is a smarmy hustler who works with Jojo to find the next "it girl"; to take to LA and do adult films. Makes lots of promises to get what he wants. 40s-50s. Tenor.
